Well done Warren

Warren Gatland’s appointment as the Coach to the 2013 British and Irish Lions was not unexpected and it is highly deserved. He is a thoroughly excellent coach, but also someone who can build and manage a team of coaches and staff to ensure success on the field. He now faces a great preparation period when he will see all that he needs to see to help him select his strongest squad.

There’ll be much speculation about who will Captain the side, and 4 names are punted already: Robshaw (England), Warburton (Wales) O’Driscoll and O’Connell (both Ireland), and in my opinion they are all in with a big shout. My only reservation is that not one of them is guaranteed a place in the Lions team, each being chased by great competition for places.

This is no doubt a “good thing” for British rugby, but it it won’t be the last challenge that Gatland faces as he prepares to select a squad that will win the series in Australia 3-0. There: I’ve said it, we will win 3-0.
