What a day: Cardiff was hosting the first ever Ashes Test match outside England and Australia. And what a great job was done by everyone at Sophia Gardens.

The ground looked fantastic, the welcome was warm and friendly and the opening ceremony had a few new twists. A band from the Welsh Guards along with Katherine Jenkins lead the crowd with Hen Wlad fy Nhadau, and that was followed by the Australian and English anthems.  Rhodri Morgan the First Minister of the Welsh Assembly Government looked as pleased as punch to meet the Aussies on parade.

And for me, a proud Welshman, it was a tear jerker. I don’t know why but I was fantastically proud to hear the first Ashes test start with my national anthem. Marvellous stuff indeed. So glad that “I was there”.

The cricket was OK, not over exciting but as the day passed and the Brains was drunk so the Barmy Army got louder and louder. And when they started singing Delilah I just knew that Cardiff had been taken to the hearts of real England cricket fans.
